6 Essential Oils for Heartbreak: How Aromatherapy Promotes Healing
Healing from trauma can be extremely difficult. Whether the trauma you experience is physical, mental, or emotional – working through the “negative” emotions you experience can take a lot of time, persistence, and patience.
The emotions you’re feeling are considered negative because they don’t feel good. They don’t feel as fulfilling, light, or enjoyable as positive emotions like joy and excitement.
Instead, so-called negative emotions feel heavy and working through them can feel like walking through quicksand.
Thankfully, there are aides to help make the healing process easier, like essential oils for heartbreak.
How does aromatherapy work? And why is it considered useful in affairs of the heart?
Essential Oils for Heartbreak – Helping You to Mend Your Heart
It’s not enough to know that oils can help – you need to know which oils to use to see the best results. Here are just six essential oils for heartbreak that will give you the emotional strength to start healing.
1. Learn Acceptance with Chamomile
Chamomile is not only soothing, it’s an anti-depressant. The calming effect that it can have can help you reach a point of acceptance. This is one of the first steps you’ll need to take before your heart can fully recover from what it’s been through. You can inhale it directly or add it to a diffuser.
2. Release “Negative” Emotions with Eucalyptus
In order to release negativity, you need an oil that is refreshing. Eucalyptus has an expansive energy that provides you with the energy needed to let go. Simply add a couple drops to a bowl of hot water and inhale for about five minutes. During this time, give yourself permission to let go of pent-up stress, anger, and hurt with every exhale.
3. Heal from Grief and/or Sadness with Jasmine
Studies have found that jasmine promotes a feeling of alertness and optimism while combating depression. It can stimulate the brain to overcome depressive thoughts. This can be especially helpful when you’re going through grief and having a hard time overcoming your sadness.
4. Experience Forgiveness with Rose Oil
Rose is often associated with love, which is a key component to forgiveness. In circumstances of heartbreak, you need to find forgiveness – both for yourself and the other person. Forgiveness doesn’t condone wrong actions, it simply lets you heal and move on with your life.

On its own, aromatherapy can give you the emotional boost you need to release thoughts, emotions, and energy.
However, these oils can be even more powerful if utilized in conjunction with other self-care practices.
Sometimes, when you’re feeling low, the only thing you feel like doing is vegetating in front of the television. This is one reason why binge watching has become so popular – it’s a great form of escape.
But to truly heal, it’s essential to work through your emotions, not simply try to escape from them.
To that end, you can use your essential oils for heartbreak along with the following self-care practices.
- Take a nice long, warm bath – Negativity can do a number on your body, causing lymphatic stagnation and sore muscles. Occasionally, it’s a good idea to take a detox bath. You can find a variety of ingredients to add, including baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and Epsom salts. Make sure you hydrate while taking your bath. And don’t forget to add essential oils for emotional healing.
- Get a massage – Massage is a great tool for emotional healing. Some people have even found that halfway into the massage they start crying, releasing emotions that have been pent up for a long time. It’s a very healing experience. Talk to your massage therapist about the type of essential oils that they add to their massage oil. Ask them if it’s possible to use one of the healing oils above.

The whole purpose of self-care – like using aromatherapy for heartbreak – is to listen to your body and find tools to help you provide what it really needs.
It’s important to note, then, that essential oils don’t affect every person in exactly the same way. You may find that an oil that’s said to promote energy and happiness actually makes you feel really agitated. Or, you may have certain physical sensitivities or allergies to some oils.
That’s ok. It doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. It simply means you need to find another oil that has similar healing properties. And there are numerous resources online that can help you find out which oil has the emotional healing capabilities that you want.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone needs a regular self-care practice. Dealing with heartbreak is difficult for everyone, but with self-care you’ll start to release feelings that aren’t serving you and begin the path toward health and happiness.
